ARTIST BIO

Samantha Howell

Samantha Howell was born in 1999 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She received her BA in Visual Art from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in 2021. Exploring her talents in drawing and painting her whole life, she has grown to recently work as an installation artist. Howell exhibited her first installation work in Array, a group exhibition at UCCS’s Galleries of Contemporary Art in 2019. Howell is now a studio art teacher at the Fountain Valley School teaching 2D and multi-medium installation.

Samantha Howell experiments in all different mediums. Drawing, painting, printmaking, digital media, and installation. Howell heavily explores the use of color and value in her 2D works, as well as her installation pieces.

Howell uses her installation pieces to define and dissect space. She transforms spaces using three-dimensional line and color to create a stimulating physical experiences for viewers. Creating an awareness of the viewer’s physical body and its relationship to the artwork is the foundation of her work. Howell uses bold and brightly colored yarn to form disorienting optical effects and illusions. Howell’s string installations are abstractly designed to evoke emotions and feelings of wonder. Creating a space for people to engage and spend time with the art is what is most important to her.
